For Pollinator Week, Be Pollinator Safe!

June 20, 2023

Every June, we observe National Pollinator Week by celebrating pollinating animals like bees and butterflies. These pollinators perform a vital service that much of life on earth quite literally could not live without. Pollinators are necessary for the reproduction of over 85% of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s crop species.

In appreciation of this incredible gift, our theme this year is Pollinator Safe: Preventing Pesticides to Protect Pollinators. While we may not be able to say that five times fast, we can share proven tips to reduce or eliminate pesticide use in our homes, plant nurseries, and communities. We hope our staff tips this week inspire a new lifelong habit or two for you. Together, we will build a safer world for pollinators!

Meet the Cast of Pollinator Week

It can be a bit awe-inspiring to consider just how many animals benefit when we chose pollinator safe practices, to say nothing of how cute they are in front of a camera, like the remarkably fuzzy Ptiloglossa mexicana bee pictured in our banner.

Each pollinator group, from beetles to bats, brings unique skills and strategies to the task of pollination. Learn more

Top 7 Reasons to Stop Pesticide Use at Home

Each year, Americans spend more than $3 billion dollars on home and garden pesticides, an estimated 60 million pounds. That includes 14 million pounds of insecticides, or 25 percent of total insecticide use.

Xerces’ pesticide program director, Aimée Code, is on a mission to change those statistics. As we explore eco-friendly alternatives to pesticide use this week, Aimee has shared a list of 7 great reasons why you should keep your home and yard pesticide-free and pollinator safe. Learn more
