Three co-op members celebrate 10 years of certification
Three members of the Southeast’s largest pastured pork cooperative–the North Carolina Natural Hog Growers’ Association (NCNHGA)–are celebrating 10 years of certification with Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW!

Nelson and Mary James of Dogwood Nursery Farms, LLC, Jeremiah and Jessica Jones of GrassRoots Pork Co. and A.D. Jones of Albert D. Jones Farm decided to pursue Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification for their pigs back in 2008 to offer a verified, trusted source of high-welfare, sustainable pork to customers.

The pioneering farmers were each presented with a commemorative sign and plaque acknowledging their decade of certification on Tuesday, August 14 at the monthly NCNHGA cooperative members meeting in Duplin County, NC (pictured above).

More health, less disease
In a new series of articles, Jennifer L. Burton, DVM, explores the world of alternative livestock therapies – and the emergence of a more “integrative” approach to animal health and welfare. The goal of the articles is to help you choose animal health care that best suits your goals, values and management approach. Standards: Constantly evolving
AGW’s farm standards are written and developed by scientists, farmers and farm animal experts from around the globe. Every year, they are reviewed and updated by the Standards Board to reflect current science and farming–and ensure the most credible certifications! Want to know more about this process? Tim Holmes, AGW’s Director of Compliance, explains on page 21 of the Summer 2017 issue of Sustainable Farming magazine
Say it with a sign!
Have you gotten your sign yet? Every AGW-certified farm can order signs (either metal or vinyl), perfect for the farm gate, barn wall or market stand. Add a copy of our How to Make the Most of Your Label booklet and you’ll be on your way to certified success! We want to help you set yourself apart in the marketplace, so be sure to contact your regional Farmer and Market Outreach Coordinator to start the conversation–and shop additional AGW-branded merchandise items here —
Supporting your on-farm events
In August, members of the AGW team joined TK Ranch as they opened their gates to the current and potential customers as part of the Alberta Open Farm Days initiative. Events like this are a great opportunity for the public to visit AGW farms and ranches to learn all about their exceptional farming practices. Do you have an event coming up or are you interested in hosting one at your farm/ranch or local retailer? Let us know and we’ll be happy to get involved!
