|Georgia Cattle Farm Turns Sunshine Into Food–And Electricity!
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW farmers are at the forefront of animal welfare and sustainability. But one Georgia farm is taking that commitment to the next level! Hunter Farms, Inc. of Jakin, GA, is now providing additional sustainable solutions for their 1,000-acre cattle ranch.
The farm is the site of a newly completed 1.8-megawatt (MW) solar project; with its completion, the farm is now harnessing sunlight for both food production and electricity! The solar project comprises 5,305 photovoltaic panels operating under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), selling all excess energy to Georgia Power.
Since 1937, the innovating farm has been an example of sustainability. Mollie and John Wesley Hunter, Sr., established Hunter Farms, Inc. and over time, the Hunter family transformed the original 50 acres of land and a few farm animals into a thriving pasture-based cattle farming operation with over 1,000 acres.
Chad and Bishop Hunter now carry on the family legacy, harnessing the power of the sun to grow nutrient-rich pastures to raise high-welfare, sustainably produced Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW beef cattle.
The Hunters are passionate advocates of sustainable farming practices–such as soil conservation, soil quality, water quality, rotational grazing and cover crops–that benefit both the land and the animals. The recent solar installation is further testament of their dedication to sustainability and farming in ways that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
We’re so proud to collaborate with innovators such as the Hunter family and hope you’re inspired, too! Read more about their newest sustainability project here >>
