| This summer, the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association was pleased that the NC General Assembly allocated funds to pilot a Healthy Corner Store Initiative after years of educating legislators. Why did we get involved? We saw a chance for our farmers to diversify their markets, for corner stores to contribute more to their local economy, and to make healthy, local food more readily available to people who live far from a grocery store.
The application is now available to corner- and community-store owners in the eastern part of the state. Take a look at the application to see if your county is included, and go talk to your local corner store owner about applying for this innovative program by the end of December so that they can stock the food you grow!

Interested stores must:
- be located in Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Tyrell, Wake, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wilson, or Vance County;
- accept or agree to accept SNAP;
- accept or agree to apply to accept WIC;
- have no more than 3,000 square feet of heated space; and
- be located in a food desert.
