Dear Rebecca,

The U.S. House is voting TODAY on bill that will keep you from knowing when genetic engineering is used to produce the food you and your family eat. Read on, then please call your Representative NOW to ask them to VOTE NO on Senate Bill 764!

A piece of legislation passed last week by the Senate, Senate Bill 764, will preempt state level GMO labeling laws, replacing them with a weaker, federal law. Senate Bill 764, like the previous versions of the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, has substantial flaws, and doesn’t do nearly enough to make sure we know what’s in our food. Earlier this week, the House Rules Committee voted that no amendments could be added to this Senate-passed version of the bill. The bill has been sent to the House floor for a full vote TODAY. If passed, it will be sent to the President to be signed into law.

What’s wrong with this version of the bill? It will still keep us in the dark about what’s in our food. It will block current any future state GMO labeling laws from being enforced without replacing state laws with a robust, mandatory, federal labeling standard. Although the bill claims to require labeling, it allows the food industry to label foods by placing a QR code on the package. The bill allows some companies to label by putting a toll–free number that consumers can call to find out if a particular product contains GMOs. If you don’t want search the internet or make a phone call to find out if there are GMOs in every processed item you purchase, please call today to tell your Representative to oppose this bill. Visit our website for more information on this harmful bill.

When you call or email, you may use this outline (or use your own language!):

“Hello, my name is ______________________ and I am a constituent of the Congressperson (if you are a farmer, be sure to mention that you are actively involved in farming). I am contacting the Representative because I oppose the Senate Bill 764 and I urge him/her VOTE NO today against the bill.

I support GMO labeling that is transparent and easy for consumers to understand. This bill does not accomplish those goals. Digital forms of labeling (like QR codes) aren’t transparent or easy to understand. I also oppose the definition of genetic engineering in the bill; it is too narrow and will keep consumers from getting the information they want about their food.

Over 90% of consumers want to know if their food contains GMOs. I should be able to eat what I want; I can only do that if labeling laws give me the information I need to make informed decisions. For these reasons, I ask you to VOTE NO on Senate Bill 764. Thank you."

Thank you for all you do,
