Action Alert from CFSA
Dear Rebecca,

The U.S. House is considering a bill that will keep you from knowing when genetic engineering is used to produce the food you and your family eat. Read on, then call your Representatives to let them know you want them to oppose Senate Bill 764!

A piece of legislation passed last week by the Senate, Senate Bill 764, will preempt state level GMO labeling laws, replacing them with a weaker, federal law. Senate Bill 764, like the previous versions of the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act, has substantial flaws, and doesn’t do nearly enough to make sure we know what’s in our food.

What’s wrong with this version of the bill? It will still keep us in the dark about what’s in our food. It will block current any future state GMO labeling laws from being enforced without replacing state laws with a robust, mandatory, federal labeling standard.

Although the bill claims to require labeling, it allows the food industry to label foods by placing a QR code on the package. The bill allows some companies to label by putting a toll –free number that consumers can call to find out if a particular product contains GMOs. If you don’t want search the internet or make a phone call to find out if there are GMOs in every processed item you purchase, please call today to tell your Representative to oppose this bill.

It’s not just that this bill makes it difficult to figure out whether a product contains genetically engineered ingredients; the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pointed out in its review of Senate Bill 764 that it requires companies to label foods made only with old forms of genetic engineering. Newer forms of genetic engineering could be exempt from the labeling requirement, as could oils made from genetically engineered plants. Want to see all genetically engineered foods labeled? Call your Representatives and tell them to oppose Senate Bill 764.

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,
