National Media Call: Agriculture and Education Secretaries, Virginia Leadership Kick off Summer Meals Program

PETERSBURG, June 7, 2016 – TODAY, following a visit to a local elementary school, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Education Secretary John B. King, Jr. and Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will host a national media call on USDA’s Summer Food Service Program to kick off the start of the summer meals season.

The Summer Food Service Program ensures that low-income children continue to receive access to nutritious meals throughout the summer. Each year, millions of meals are served to children and teens at over 50,000 sites through the duration of the summer. With many kids relying on over half of their calories from school meals, hunger doesn’t end when school’s out.

Secretary Vilsack, Secretary King, and Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will spend Tuesday morning handing out meals at a summer food service site in rural Virginia, and then will host a national media call to discuss the importance of this program to children in need across America, and how families can find summer meals sites in their area.
