Western monarch butterfly population declines

While we do see losses in conservation, there is also a long history of species coming back from the brink thanks to the tireless dedication of people who care. So when our monitoring work at Xerces turns up bad news, like another sharp decline of western monarchs, it’s important to also remember that we know exactly what to do. Yard by yard, farm by farm, vote by vote, we can make a difference.

Western Monarch Butterfly Population Declines to Near Record Low

The 28th annual Western Monarch Count has reported a peak population of just 9,119 butterflies this winter. This is the second lowest overwintering population ever recorded.
