Dear Dennis,

Spring is officially here in the Northern hemisphere, and we hope the season ahead is a good one. This week we’re sharing news on the USDA’s revision on the “Product of USA” labeling claim, the newest online issue of Sustainable Farming magazine and tips on hosting on-farm events for the upcoming season. Thanks for reading and for being part of AGW’s network of farmers.

USDA Finalizes New Requirements for the Voluntary “Product of USA” Labeling Claim

The USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a final rule—indicating new regulatory requirements for the voluntary “Product of the USA” claim to better align the claim with consumer understanding of its meaning. The final rule allows the voluntary “Product of USA” or “Made in the USA” claim to be used only on FSIS-regulated products that are derived from animals born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the United States. While it’s important to note that this is only a voluntary claim and county of origin labeling is still not required, we support this revision and see it as an opportunity to enhance clarity and transparency in food labeling. Producers in Canada can find information about Canadian rules for country of origin labeling here, including which products are required to be labeled and guidelines for voluntary origin claims.

New Issue of Sustainable Farming Available Online

The Spring 2024 issue of AGW’s Sustainable Farming magazine is ready to view online. Written for farmers, ranchers, producers and anyone interested in sustainable, high-welfare livestock production, the magazine includes news, opinion and program activities, as well as in-depth technical features and case studies. We hope you enjoy it!
