January 24, 2024

There’s nothing like seeing hard work pay off. Volunteers have been busy these past few months with the Western Monarch Count, and the results are nearly complete ahead of our announcement on January 30. Habitat conservation across their breeding range is key to the monarchs’ continued survival, and we’re taking you along to visit everyday Californians who are making a difference.
Habitat Projects Making a Difference for California Pollinators

Every year, Xerces works with dozens of partners and gives away tens of thousands of plants through our habitat kit program in California. Last summer, we set out to visit a few of the more than 400 partners who have installed a habitat kit since the program started in 2019.

We were awestruck by the diversity of landscapes that are being transformed. Through this program, people are creating greenspaces in cities, parks, preserves, farms, ranches, schools and tribal lands. From coastal dunes to chaparral, oak woodlands to grasslands, and vineyards to vegetable gardens, our partners are forming a patchwork of refugia for people and pollinators alike. Learn more.

Remembering Ralph Masturzo: A Legacy of Conservation and Generosity

The Xerces community lost a long-time member and dedicated supporter of invertebrate conservation with the passing of Ralph Masturzo. Described by his family as kind, thoughtful, and generous, he had a passion for observing nature.

For over 25 years, Ralph donated each year to support Xerces conservation work. In passing, Ralph generously included Xerces in his will and all of us at Xerces are so grateful for this gesture. We will work to honor Ralph’s legacy and protect the animals that he held so dear. Learn more.
