Insect activity may be slowing down, but our work at the Xerces Society is still heating up, with a full slate of new resources and activities for the colder months. Volunteers are still being accepted for this year’s Western Monarch Count, or folks anywhere can curl up with a good podcast from our new show, Bug Banter, to learn more about some of our planet’s most interesting inhabitants.
Xerces Seeks Endangered Species Act Protection for the Large Marble Butterfly, a Once-Common Western Species

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has submitted a petition for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to protect several subspecies of the large marble butterfly, Euchloe ausonides, under the Endangered Species Act. The large marble butterfly is found in 16 states ranging from Alaska to New Mexico and as far east as Michigan. Despite its widespread distribution, studies have ranked the large marble as one of the western butterfly species most at risk of extinction in the next 50 years. Learn more

Protecting Invertebrates – Even When We Can’t See Them

Pesticides are a leading threat to fireflies and other insects. Fireflies’ behavior, habitat, and life cycle make them particularly vulnerable to several common home pesticide applications.

Since fireflies spend so much time underground, this means pesticide applications to the soil, like broadcast lawn treatments, are particularly risky to these species. Another hidden source of pesticide exposure to fireflies is residential mosquito sprays. Learn more
