Few people take notice of moths, despite their close relationship with butterflies. The muted colors of many species, along with the reputation of a tiny fraction of them as pests, has done little to endear moths to the casual observer. But the truth is that moths are a beautiful and interesting wildlife group. In honor of National Moth Week, we challenge you to expand your moth knowledge this week and discover your favorite moth species!
Searching for Rare Butterflies on the Oregon and California Coasts

This summer, Xerces conservation biologists set out to find rare butterfly species in the wild. The seaside hoary elfin (Callophrys polios maritima) and coastal greenish blue (Plebejus saepiolus littoralis) are known from only a handful of locations along the Oregon and northern California coasts. With fewer than 30 records of each butterfly species spanning over 88 years and 300 miles, these butterflies are hard to find. Learn more

Moths Are Cool, Too!

Both butterflies and moths belong to the order Lepidoptera, however many are surprised to learn that moth species outnumber butterflies significantly. In North America there are 800 species of butterflies and just over 11,000 species of moths.

To create a moth-friendly garden, include what we recommend for other types of pollinators: an abundant selection of native flowering plants, host plants for caterpillars, shelter in the form of leaf litter or small brush piles, and protection from pesticides. Learn more
