Dear Rebecca,

Welcome to the September 2021 edition of The Buzz. Activity in the sustainable agriculture world continues to heat up, especially at the federal level.

The CFSA Policy Team has been hard at work on lobbying North and South Carolina congressional offices to fund climate-smart agriculture policies in the $3.5 trillion infrastructure package that represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest in sustainable agriculture as a solution to climate change. Our requests included:

  • $30 billion for United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) conservation programs,
  • $5 billion for climate-focused research,
  • $2 billion for rural renewable energy programs, and
  • $1 billion to fund Value Added Producer Grants (VAPG) and small meat processing capacity.

In closing, I’d like to use this space to congratulate our South Carolina policy coordinator, Matt, who is quickly becoming a national thought leader on small meat processing issues. He recently co-authored a blog post on the subject for the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition’s website. Matt was also instrumental in gathering comments from farmers about how the $500 million already appropriated should be spent before the August 30 deadline. Great job, Matt!

In solidarity,

Nick Wood, CFSA Advocacy Manager
