April 18, 2017 Dear BRS Stakeholder, The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is making available for public comment a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) prepared in connection with a permit application for the field release of genetically engineered (GE) diamondback moths. The moths are genetically engineered for repressible female lethality and to express red fluorescence as a marker. The purpose of the proposed field release is to assess the feasibility and efficacy of these moths in reducing populations of diamondback moth, a known plant pest and serious threat to agriculture. The draft EA will be available for a 30-day public review and comment period upon publication of its availability in the Federal Register on April 19, 2017. APHIS will consider all public comments received on or before May 19, 2017. The associated documents can be viewed on the BRS News Webpage. |
